Bert Monroy - layer after layer…

This is my latest and most ambitious digital painting of a Chicago scene unveiled at Photoshop World in Miami on March 22, 2006.
It is a panorama of the Damen Station on the Blue Line of the Chicago Transit Authority.
Adobe Illustrator was used for generating the majority of the basic shapes as well as all the buildings in the Chicago skyline.
The rest was created in Photoshop.
• The image size is 40 inches by 120 inches.
• The flattened file weighs in at 1.7 Gigabytes.
• It took eleven months (close to 2,000 hours) to create.
• The painting is comprised of close to fifty individual Photoshop files.
• Taking a cumulative total of all the files, the overall image contains over 15,000 layers.
• Over 500 alpha channels were used for various effects.
• Over 250,000 paths make up the multitude of shapes throughout the scene.

The Power Of Branding

This is actaully kind of funny to have a look at, but it also just goes to show the power of a good brand/logo.

monochrom’s attempt to evaluate the actual power of brands by making Austrian people draw a total of twelve logos (nine international, three typically European) from memory, 25 people per brand. Salut, share of mind!

Apple?

SWEET!

have your magazine… and eat it too!

Research shows that a diet high in refined sugar and food colouring can add weeks, if not months, to your life. That’s why at Lifelounge we’re developing a new magazine that is choc-a-block full of the sweet white stuff. Each and every page of the Sweet Edition will be specially printed on a unique edible toffee paper*, so you’ll be able to read your magazine and eat it too! Mmmmm delicious. If you’d like to add some sweetness in the form of story ideas, photography, art, design or anything else that would lethally harm a diabetic please email us by 20 January 2006.

*Subject to government health regulations.

sweet edition, baby!

that’s really interesting. this first issue is supposed to be out February/March, i’ll be keeping an eye out for this one. let me know if you see any strange toffee paper magazines around the place.

and if you’re an artist and want to be featured in the Sweet Art section of the mag, make sure you email in your submissions before 20th January 2006.

Intel’s new image

Intel seems to be making alot of changes lately. now they’ve got a brand new logo and tagline as part of a $2.5 billion advertising and marketing blitz. Intel is shifting it’s focus from the PC platform to other hardware and software platforms ranging from consumer electronics to health care.

new Intel logo. leap ahead, baby!

it looks like they’ve done a good job updating it.

and just so you can compare it up against the preivous logo’s…

Intel's previous logo. well-known, but stuck in the 80's

here’s the new stickers that will most likely start appearing on computers and other devices…

Designers - how much to charge?

antique cash registers might not help you know how much to charge... but they can look cool.

an interesting article for any designers looking to do some freelance work, or just wondering how to calculate some reasonable rates to charge.

It’s a tough spot. Charge too much and you don’t get the work, charge too little and you end up with a bad taste in your mouth from eating frozen burritos 3 times a day. What I find the most is that most designers don’t charge enough. I’ve heard of people doing entire Web sites for $1,000, brochures for $300 or charging a whopping $25 an hour. This is insane!
