Terapixel

PostPixel loves some good pixel news. So it’s great to announce the Terapixel!! Some clever folks have blasted away the 4GB TIFF file format size limit, creating thier own version called BigTIFF, needed for the 143GB that makes up a terapixel image.

Of course the image is available for viewing online, link below.

Disco

It’s about time that apps started to use all the great Core features of OS X…

fire in the disco

The Public Beta is out. I just had to give it a try… and it looks like it can do just about everything that I’ve been using Toast for… burn UDF DVD’s, create disk images from files. Although I’m not sure if it can mount disk images like Toast. Either way, I’m using Disco from now on. 8-)

For those of you unfortunate enough not to have OS X and see this for yourselves, you can check out this video.

Portal

I found this Portal trailer last week some time. It looks like the guys at Valve have replaced the gravity gun in Half Life 2 wih a portal gun. This trailer looks very interesting…

Welcome to Aperture training labs...

If at first you don't succeed, you fail

I guess they’re going to have to make every situation extremely difficult now that portals are available, but I’m sure they’ll come up with some very interesting one’s as well…

Remember our motto...

When you get stuck - remember the Aperture Labs motto - “There’s a hole in the sky through which things can fly.” :D
Sounds like fun, I can’t wait! I think I’m going to buy HL2 just so I can get in on this Portal action.

There’s some ‘in-game’ footage in the trailer, so you’ll just have to download it and have a look. Then have another look, and another…

Apple Lame Tip of the Week

I always check out the Apple Pro Tips page hoping to see some new and useful thing that I didn’t know about before. So when I saw Copy and Delete at the Same Time I was intrigued… Here’s the tip:

If you’re archiving a file to disk (let’s say to an external FireWire drive for example), you can drag the icon of the file you want to archive directly to that drive and the Mac will write a copy to that drive. However, your original file still lives on your current hard drive. If you want to have that file deleted from your drive as soon as it’s copied to another drive, just hold the Command key as you drag your icon, and the Mac will do two tasks for you — copy the file to the new drive and delete the original from your drive.

By the time I’d read to the end, I realised something, and thought to myself - “Hey, that’s called moving a file!”

Way to go.

Shake 4.1 - the end of the line

The node-based compositing app, Shake has seen it’s last version upgrade as it hits 4.1 and is released as a Universal Binary.

advanced digital compositing

Rumors were that Shake would be dropped by Apple as the development team was scaled back. But it’s not the end of Apple’s domination of the high-end compositing market. Replacement software is apparently under development, codenamed Phenomenon. This looks like it’ll be based on the current Motion code, but won’t be released until 2008.

I’ll miss seeing the massive node trees… although I’m sure Apple wouldn’t drop the much-loved node-based solution, unless they’ve come up with something better. ;)

a very small part of the big picture

Oh yes, almost forgot to mention one last change to Shake 4.1. The price. It’s dropped. Previously $4499, Shake 4.1 is now available for $769.

Apple Store, Fifth Avenue - Grand Opening

More details on Apple’s new Fifth Avenue retail store…

Fifth Avenue store, 24/365

The store is now officially open, time lapse video is available of the first 24 hours of the stores opening. Someone even used the time lapse video to propose. (Hope she’s an Apple fan. )

Fifth Avenue store, 24/365

Steve Jobs was interviewed on CNBC to mark the opening of their new store, which will be open 24/365. Nice. 8)
Comments were also made on the choice to run with Intel chips rather than AMD, and… the iPhone…
